The landscape of the West Pennine Moors is charged with colour. This autumn the grasslands are pure russet. The moors stretch inland from Withnell Moor through Roddlesworth beech wood, then up to the higher moors and on past Hanging Stones. From here you can see a distant Manchester. Then turning slightly north you pass more sparkling lakes. Crossing Entwistle's broad vale before you climb up over and then then down to 13 Stone Hill. In many ways this has become my hearth land for many years. Here nature has clung on to the West Pennines despite human kinds uncaring ways. The watershed and high moors are swept clean daily by sun, wind and rain. Cloud shadows dull or bright race along the ground. They pass over farms some working, some falling and some gone to rubble in a sea of grass.

"How lovely it is to lie in a feld and dream....Above me the skylark flutters into the haze, all the while singing a silken tent over its territory, until it is a speck in my eye." Pg 137 Meadowland John Lewis Stempel

"This 90-square-mile area of wild, unspoilt countryside is a rural haven and a perfect contrast to the nearby character full towns. The best way to discover this diverse patchwork of wildlife-rich moorland with its numerous reservoirs, historic villages and dense woodland is on foot. Numerous walking paths criss-cross the region and there are trails for every experience level. " see Visit lancashire. for more details.
I've enjoyed my days walking and painting on the moors.
